    在此次演讲中，卡兹教授将从国际传播的视角对自己的一些经历和研究结论进行回顾评论。
    在此次演讲的第一部分，卡茨教授将首先与听众分享他在四个阿拉伯国家和土耳其有关公共舆论和传播的研究；其次，通过社会学、考古学、历史学和宗教研究的思路考察思想和事件在国际范围内如何传播的；最后，卡茨教授将对CNN在海湾战争危机中的表现予以评述。
    在演讲的第二部分，卡茨教授将根据他的研究和经历提供一些结论性的东西以及介绍一些组织机构，再次提及勒纳（Lerner）的移情理论（empathy）的复兴，试图揭示当前媒介影响的研究在我们这个领域的定义有多么狭隘，通过提供一些非同寻常的有关意识形态、精神的、道德的案例而将当前国际传播的消费者“概念化”。
ABSTRACT
In this talk, I review my experience, and some conclusions, from work in the field of international communication.  In Part One, I recall, first, my share  analysis l Research of public opinion and communication  in four Arab countries and Turkey.
Secondly, I discuss how research on the international diffusion of ideas and things—throughout recorded history.  I connect the work on diffusion with other traditions of social science, including rural sociology, archaeology, history of religion, and sometimes the whole world, to share the collective  experience  of reconciliation, as in Anwar Sadat’s gesture to Israel,  and/or of devastation, as in 9/11，the nighttime soap opea ‘Dallas’  captivated the whole world, albeit not simultaneously.
And, finally, I review the performance of international almost-stateless media such as CNN in situations of crisis such as the Gulf War.
In Part Two, I offer some conclusions, and some freer associations, based on these experiences.  I return, as I began, to the current revival of Lerner’s  “empathy,” in order both to illustrate how narrowly media effects have been defined in our field, and to provide an unusually compelling example of  the cognitive, emotional and moral  ways in which the contemporary consumer of international communication is being conceptualized

【主讲人介绍】

    伊莱·卡茨(Elihu Katz) 是一位终生致力于传播研究的社会学家。他在哥伦比亚大学与其导师保罗拉扎斯菲尔德于1955年合写的著作正是致力于观察大众传播和人际传播互相之间的影响。
    在20世纪60年代后期，卡茨教授接受了以色列政府的邀请，负责引入电视广播的研究。在此期间，他还担任BBC广播研究的顾问。20世纪70年代中期，受到由安瓦尔萨达特（Anwar Sadat）缔造和平倡议的启发，卡茨和丹尼尔·达扬（Daniel Dayan）在1992出版了《媒介事件：历史的现场直播》一书。该书经历了长达15年的合作，现在已被翻译成七种语言在全世界出版。在于利贝斯（Tamar Liebes）的合作当中，卡茨开始了对另一广播类型——夜间肥皂广播剧的研究。他们的著作《意义的输出：肥皂剧〈达拉斯〉的跨文化解读 》（1990年，已经翻译为汉语），已被公认为跨文化研究的经典著作。
    卡茨是教科文组织加拿大麦克卢汉奖、布尔达奖（媒体方面）的得主。除此之外，他还获得了，包括来自根特，蒙特利尔，巴黎，海法和罗马大学的荣誉学位，并被选为美国艺术与科学学院成员。

The major introduction of Prof. Elihu Katz

Elihu Katz is a sociologist who has spent most of a lifetime in research on communication. His first book, co-authored in 1955 with his Columbia University mentor, Paul Lazarsfeld, was an attempt to observe the flow of influence at the intersections of mass and interpersonal communication. 
In the late1960s,Katz accepted the invitation of the Government of Israel to head the task force charged with the introduction of television broadcasting. This experience found expression in his subsequent academic work. During this period, he also served as consultant on broadcasting research to the BBC. In the mid-70s, inspired by Anwar Sadat peace-making initiative, Katz and Daniel Dayan published their 1992 book, Media Events, representing some 15 years of collaboration, is now in print in seven languages. Katz joined Tamar Liebes in a study of another genre of broadcasting, the nighttime soap and published their book on cross-cultural differences in the reception of Dallas is entitled he Export of Meaning?(1990).
Katz is winner of the UNESCO-Canada McLuhan Prize, the Burda Prize (in media res), and other distinctions, including honorary degrees from the Universities of Ghent, Montreal, Paris, Haifa and Rome. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
